The Sacred Valley of the Incas is “carved” by the Wilkamayu, a sacred river inside of the Andean’s man cosmovision.
The river Wilkamayu originates on the border between the current departments of Cusco and Puno in the pass called La Raya (14 232 feet). Its name comes from the Quechua language Wilka - sacred and Mayu - River; It’s now known as the Urubamba river or Vilcanota river. The Spanish colonizers gave it a name upon arrival in these valleys.
This river is considered sacred by the inhabitants of these areas near the Cusco valley; in their beliefs related to the water cycle, the Wilkamayu (Urubamba river) will join with the Milky Way (the great heavenly cosmic river). Then during the rainy season, it will come back down to earth to fertilize the soil and fields of these valleys, which belonged to the Incas and their families, the Andean priests, and their Gods.
This beautiful valley has many archaeological complexes with different uses and functions, such as checkpoints at the entry and exit of the Valley, food storage, also important ceremonial centers scattered along the riverbed and at the top of the mountains surrounding the valley.
