The Alpaca herders and the Rainbow Mountains

The Palccoyo community is located at 14 763 feet, It’s inhabited by Alpacas and Llamas’s herders who these days preserve and live the traditions of their ancestors. Their main economic activity is the herding of Llamas and Alpacas, this is an incredible place where you’ll see thousands of alpacas living freely in the Peruvian Andes, and discover the importance of these animals in the development of the Andean civilization. If you like to see these beautiful animals and get some pictures, this Andean valley is the place you are looking for.

This place is also known by the name Mountains of Colors, the  Rainbow Mountains, or Valley of Colors has gained popularity that has earned among tourists thanks to the landscapes that this Valley of Colors shows. The highest part of the trekking circuit is known as The Rock Forest ( 16 273 feet) from where you can see that the places where you walked are multicolored stripes, crossing the valley and mountains. Beyond being just three mountains furrowed in colors, this valley has been painted by the artists of these latitudes; erosion and nature, who use minerals, rain, wind, and snow to create this beautiful and unique landscape. Special mention is the view that gives us the Apu Ausangate the highest Mountain of the southern Peru Andes (20 997 feet) dominating to the north, the entire Vilcanota Range, with their glaciers Mariposa, Nevado del Inca, Hatun Hampa among others are part of this mountain chain that limits the eastern Andes and the Amazon rainforest. These glaciers, mainly the Ausangate, are considered "Apus'' or protective spirits, guardians, and connectors between the world of the gods and the world of men. All this philosophy is part of the cosmovision of the Andean man.

  1. Itinerary -

This one-day Tour to the Palccoyo Valley of Colors is designed in a way you can get enough rest one night before and still have a complete and unforgettable tour. We leave the Hotel at 6 am to enjoy a wonderful day in the southern Peru Andes. We drive to the Cusipata district where we have our breakfast buffet to reload energy and get ready for our adventure. Then we walk in the direction of the mountains ascending to Palccoyo´s community where we share and learn with the locals their customs and traditions. The Valley of Colors awaits us 30 minutes from the community, fortunately, this Valley is not yet as popular as the famous Vinicunca Mountain or Rainbow Mountain; so we can guarantee a more personal and intimate experience with nature. The hike is simple and easy to do, approximately 3 hours round trip, most of the route is easy but you should not underestimate the altitude (15748 feet). This tour is accompanied by a herder and an Alpaca who escort us through the valley and you can take some pictures with the alpaca in the best places. It’s another way to support the herders of this Valley.

On the way back to Cusco, a delicious lunch buffet of Peruvian food waiting for us, we can not forget that Peruvian cuisine is famous for the variety of agricultural products that we can find in Perú. We are back in the city at approximately 4 in the afternoon.
