The city above the Clouds. Machu Picchu
The Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu is a protected natural area with 32,592 hectares, which corresponds to the rain forest, a zone of transition and interaction between the Andes and the Amazon jungle. It is a unique ecosystem with biodiversity in flora and fauna, home to several species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects, as well as endemic forests with a great variety of orchids. In addition, it presents numerous pre-Columbian trails known as Qapaqñan, that travel from the snowy peaks at more than 6000 meters above sea level and joins the city of Cusco and the world-famous Llaqta de Machu Picchu.
Most academics tell us that the Llaqta de Machu Picchu, the correct name for this archaeological complex, was planned and built by the ninth Inca, Pachacuteq, during his reign in the 15th century. It was his resting place, later abandoned and disappearing in time and history but not from the memory of some locals who knew what their ancestors had left on the top of the old mountain.
The year 1911 was rediscovered by the explorer Hiram Bingham who thought he had reached the lost citadel of Vilcabamba. All this happened nine years after the visit made by Agustin Lizarraga from Cusco, who was the first to achieve the Inca citadel guided by people from the area. Today Machu Picchu is one of the new seven wonders. You can choose different experiences, from walks through the Inka Trail or train services.
