The Condor's flight and the Apurimac Canyon. (The Talking God Canyon)
The Apurímac is one of the most important rivers, belonging to the Cusco region, it is considered sacred by the Incas and their descendants as well as the Wilkamayu or Vilcanota river that gives life to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, however, the Apurimac River forms one of the largest and most beautiful canyons in the world.
Its name comes from the Quechua words: Apu- god or protector spirit and Rímac - Talk or talker; so his name means -talking god-. This river and the canyon that it forms are currently the natural borders between the department of Cusco and Apurímac.
The Apurímac Canyon is eroded by the rapid descent of the river's waters from 5000 m.a.s.l. up to 500 m.a.s.l. in just a 210 km route. and like the Colca Canyon (Arequipa), they offer us the possibility of admiring the majestic flight of the Andean Condor, the largest flying bird in the world. This majestic bird represents the world of the gods within the Andean worldview, therefore it was an admired and sacred animal.
The main difference between the Apurímac Canyon and the Colca Canyon is that the Apurímac is a new alternative for tourism within the Cusco region, which makes the presence of other tourists in the area very low, which facilitates observation of these birds in all their splendor.
On this trip with us, we will also visit the viewpoint of the Pampaconga community where we will be able to appreciate one of the most important snow-capped mountains of Cusco and southern Peru, the Salkantay, here a small fair of textiles woven with ancestral techniques by the community members of the area, then we will visit the ceremonial platform of Tarawasi, a place where pre-Hispanic architecture mixes with the beautiful landscapes that surround this fertile valley where we will learn about the production and export of avocados (the name by which avocado is known in Peru) and We will taste delicious meals based on this special ingredient from the Limatambo region.
