Few places in the world can impress and take your breath away the first time you experience them. The Humantay lake is one of these incredible places of singular beauty and mysticism, this is the reason why this destination is one of the most visited by travelers who enjoy adventure, hiking, and nature.

It is located at 4200 (masl), at the base of the Humantay mountain (5473 masl), which together with the Salkantay (6271 masl), is the majestic snow-capped part of the Vilcabamba mountain range that will accompany us in this experience.

For the Andean man, these places were sacred. The mountains that we have mentioned previously were tutelary spirits called -Apus-, which communicated the world of man with the world of the gods; therefore, these Apus were protectors of man and messengers from the earthly to the divine. In these lands, the lagoons were known as -Pacarinas- and they were also sacred, they were considered the place of origin of the llamas and alpacas, who form a very important part of the Andean civilization. All these wonderful places are part of the network of Inca trails known as Qapaqñan, the road surrounding this area is known as Salkantay Trek, an Inca trail that ends in Machu Picchu.

The beautiful Humantay Lake gives us different colors depending on the perspective and the place you observe it. Some places are ideal to take amazing pictures, although unfortunately, a photograph can hardly ever capture the beauty or emotion that you feel being in a place as special as this.

  1. Itinerary -

    We designed this one-day program for Vinicunca and the Red Valley viewpoint to enjoy the most beautiful landscapes in the southern Andes of Perú. It will be essential to pay attention to each recommendation provided by our guide and team to avoid setbacks and complications,

    The pick-up time from the hotel will be at 3:30 am. Then we will travel along the main road to Cusipata, where we will take a detour that will take us to ascend through the mountains to our starting point of the trek. Our breakfast will be light and energetic to avoid problems with digestion or other discomforts due to the altitude at which we will be.

    Our walk begins at 6 am (4850 masl.) in the direction of the Vinicunca viewpoint (5036 masl.). Where we will enjoy the Vinicunca and the glaciers surrounding it, which are part of the Vilcanota mountain range, this is not an easy trek. Our arrival time at the viewpoint will depend on the physical condition of the participants, approximately one hour on a flat path without steep ascents. Then three short and demanding slopes can take your breath away. Remember that we will be at 4900 meters above sea level, which makes the walk challenging. Reducing your speed and increasing the number of breaks will help you achieve your goal. Another option to get there is to rent horses to support us in the most complicated section of the day. We recommended this alternative to save energy to complete the circuit the best way possible.

    We will arrive at our first objective, the Vinicunca Viewpoint (5036 meters above sea level). After taking some photos and enjoying a few minutes of the view, it is time to carry on to the direction of the Red Valley, previously coordinated with the guide responsible for the group. The safety and health of our clients are our priority. Therefore the guide is qualified to attend to possible emergencies and evaluate situations where the health or integrity of our passengers may be exposed.

    After taking the necessary measures to continue our trek, we will cross the Red Valley. We need three hours for our walk through this magical place. Most of the trail is moderate descent, which makes the walk easy and fun, but we must not forget the altitude at which we are and, because of the long walk in the last hour, we could feel a little affected by the “soroche” or high altitude sickness. A lot of hydration, sun protection, and following the recommendations of our guide is the best way to avoid setbacks on the mountain.

    At the end of the trek, our transport waits to take us to enjoy a delicious Peruvian food buffet lunch and then arrive in Cusco at approximately 4 in the afternoon, the best time to rest and prepare for the Cusco night.

    • If you buy the group tour and there is not a minimum of 2 people in total, you will have the option of:
      • Postpone tour date.
      • Get the refund.
      • Pay the difference between the group tour and the private tour and do the private tour.

     

    Cancellation policies

    • If the reservation is canceled up to 3 days before the tour, there will be no refund.
    • If the reservation is canceled between 3-7 days before the tour, 50% will be refunded.
    • If the reservation is canceled seven days before the tour, we refund 100%.
    • Change of date costs $20.00 per traveler and is subject to availability.
